Student Guide to Public Transportation in Istanbul

Istanbul spans two continents and over 5,000 km², making transport a challenge. Luckily, its public transportation system is reliable, affordable, and especially useful for students. This guide covers routes, tickets, schedules, and tips to get around with ease.

Transportation Card

The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality provides discounted transportation cards for students (Öğrenci İstanbulkart).

  • How to apply:
  • Required documents:
    • Öğrenci Belgesi (student certificate)
    • Passport photo
    • Identification (Kimlik or Passport)
  • Cost: 140 TL (new card fee)

Fare Options:

  • Discounted fare: 15–30 TL per ride (depending on vehicle)
  • Monthly subscription: 200 taps for 480 TL (1–3 taps depending on vehicle)

Your Journey to Yıldız Technical University

Beşiktaş Campus (Yıldız)

  • M7 Metro Line:
    Get off at Yıldız Station (campus is right next to it).
  • IETT Buses:
    27E, 27ES, 29A, 29C, 29D, 29E, 30A, 36G, 40B, 41E, 43R, 559C, 58A, 58N, 58S, 58UL, 62, 62G, 63, U2

Davutpaşa Campus

  • M1 Metro Line:
    Get off at Davutpaşa–Yıldız Teknik Üniversitesi Station → exit at A Kapısı → take ring buses to faculties.
  • Metrobus:
    Stop at Cevizlibağ Station → take YTU’s free ring buses (every 15 minutes).
  • IETT Buses:
    • 41AT → goes directly into campus (free if boarding from A Kapısı).
    • 85C → stops at B Kapısı.
  • Ring Service Buses:
    Free buses within Davutpaşa Campus and between Cevizlibağ and campus.

Campus Ring Schedule

  • Davutpaşa → Yıldız: 07:45, 11:30, 16:00
  • Yıldız → Davutpaşa: 07:30, 09:00, 12:30, 17:00

Metro Route Between Campuses

If taking the metro instead of ring buses, use the following route:

  1. Yıldız → Mecidiyeköy (Pink line, M7)
  2. Mecidiyeköy → Yenikapı (Green line, M2)
  3. Yenikapı → YTU Davutpaşa Kampüs (Red line, M1a)

⚠️ Important:

  • On the M1 line, make sure to take the Atatürk Airport direction (right side platform).
  • Avoid the Kirazlı direction (left side platform).

Travel time: 1–1.5 hours
Tip: For your first trips, leave 2 hours early to avoid confusion while switching lines.
